    新大陸「アメリカ」の生みの親アメリゴ・ベスプッチ

    画像は釜山・国立海洋博物館に展示されるアメリゴ・ベスプッチの肖像画である。キャプションでは次のように紹介される。

    Amerigo Vespucchi (1454 - 1512)
    An explorer of Italy. He was an initial explorer of the American Continent. While publishing his explorarion experiences in the coast of Brazil in a travelogue, he named this new Continent America after his name.
    アメリゴ・ベスプッチはイタリアの探検家である。彼はアメリカ大陸の最初の探検者となった。彼は旅行談の中で ブラジル沿岸を探検した体験を出版するとともに、彼の名を取って新大陸を「アメリカ」と名付けるにいたった。
