画像は英国グリニッジの国立海洋博物館において展示されるフィギュアヘッド2体である。 （1）　左の画像の船首像は鉄製の商業帆船「コリオラヌス」のものである。同帆船は、1876年にスコットランドのダンバートンで建造された。 その帆走スピードで有名で、「ジュート・クリッパーの女王」というニックネームをもっていた。 その船体設計は賞の授与に輝き、また1876-77年における最初の航海に際して、英国海峡からインドの Hooghly River までわずか65日間 で航海するという未到の記録を樹立した。 船首像は古代ローマの将軍コリオラヌス (Caius Martius Coriolanus) である。オリジナルの船首像は、南アフリカ沿岸沖でハリケーンの さ中に失われ、その後1902年に替わりに造られた船首像である。 [参考]　研究社刊の「リーダーズ英和辞典」(監修：松田徳一郎) によれば、コリオラヌス (Gaius Marcus Coriolanus) とは、紀元前5 世紀の古代ローマの伝説上の将軍である。祖国ローマは敵国を頼って彼を追放しようとした。彼はその祖国に復讐しようとするが、 母・妻の訴えで攻撃を諦めたといわれる。 （2）　右の画像は、トーマス・ブラッセイの蒸気ヨット (快走船)「サンビーム」のフィギュアヘッドである。サンビームは、 英国政治家トーマス・ブラッセイの娘のコンスタンス・アルバータのニックネームであった。 彼女は4歳児であった1873年に猩紅熱 (しょうこう熱) のために死亡した。船首像は子供の天使としての彼女を表している。 ブラッセイ家の人々は1876-77年に新しい自家用ヨット「サンビーム」で世界一周を行なった。 1876年7月に船出した同家の人々は、総勢43名にて、翌年1月日本に到着した。ブラッセイ夫人がその世界一周旅行記を著している。 帆船「コリオラヌス号」および蒸気ヨット「サンビーム号」の展示説明パネルには、船首像の由来などを次のように記されている。 (1) Figurehead of the merchant sailing ship Coriolanus 1902 A Roman general This figurehaed comes from the iron merchant sailing ship Coriolanus and represents the Roman general Caius Martius Coriolanus. The ship was built at Dumbarton, Scotland, in 1876. The figurehead is a replacement, made in 1902 after the original one was lost during a hurricane off the coast of South Africa. Coriolanus The merchant sailing ship Coriolanus was nicknamed the ‘Queen of the Jute Clippers' as she was famous for her speed. With her award-winning hull design, Coriolanus set the unbroken record during the first voyage in 1876-77 by sailing from the English Channel to the Hooghly River in India in only 65 days. (2) Figurehead of Thomas Brassey's steam yacht Sunbeam 1874 The child angel ‘Sunbeam’ was the nickname of Constance Alberta, the daughter of the politician Thomas Brassey, later Earl Brassey (1836-1918). She died of scarlet fever in 1873, aged four, and the figurehead represents her as a child angel. The Brassey family sailed round the world in their new yacht Sunbeam in 1876-77.
